What You Need to Know About Maryland Safety Inspections:
- Who needs an inspection?
Most used vehicles in Maryland must pass a safety inspection before being sold or transferred. The seller or transferor is generally responsible for obtaining the inspection certification. - How to get an inspection:
To get a Maryland Safety Inspection Certification, your vehicle must be inspected at a licensed inspection station. Montgomery Mall Exxon is authorized to inspect certain vehicle classes (see below for more details). After your vehicle passes the inspection, the certification is electronically sent to the Maryland Vehicle Administration (MVA).
Vehicle Classes Inspected at Montgomery Mall Exxon:
- Class A – Passenger vehicles, autocycles, limousines, multipurpose passenger vehicles, recreational motor homes, and trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,000 pounds or less, as well as trailers without air brakes.
What to do before the inspection:
- Schedule your inspection:
It’s recommended to make an appointment for your safety inspection. - Vehicle registration:
Ensure your vehicle is properly registered in Maryland or another state. If the vehicle has not been inspected yet and can’t be registered, you may qualify for a 30-day temporary registration to legally drive it to the inspection station.
Inspection Process:
- The inspection is conducted electronically through the Maryland Safety Inspection System. If your vehicle meets the state’s safety standards, the inspection mechanic will electronically certify it, and the results will be sent directly to the MVA. Be sure to provide an email address to receive your inspection receipt electronically.
- Temporary Registration:
If you have a temporary registration, after passing the inspection, you can visit the MVA’s myMVA website the next business day to request your new registration card and stickers, which will be mailed to you, saving a trip to the MVA.
What happens if your vehicle fails the inspection?
If your vehicle does not meet the required safety standards, a Maryland Inspection Certification cannot be issued. You will need to repair the identified issues and have the vehicle re-inspected at the same station by the same registered inspection mechanic.
